49ers free-agent target No. 2: Right tackle Isaiah Wynn

As much as some fans loved dogging on Mike McGlinchey, the hard reality is that it’s going to be difficult for the Niners to replace him.

Currently, San Francisco’s contingency plan for the likely anticipated McGlinchey departure is to insert the backup veteran, Colton McKivitz, in at right tackle. After all, just like Jake Brendel relieved a retiring center in Alex Mack entering 2022, the turnover to younger and cheaper options will look to run its course here again.

Yet McKivitz is a downgrade from McGlinchey, especially in run support. Unfortunately, there aren’t too many remaining upgrades out there in NFL free agency, and this year’s draft is generally considered to be weak on offensive linemen.

Depending on what happens with former New England Patriots right tackle Isaiah Wynn, who is reportedly drawing interest from multiple teams, the 49ers could look and see if they nab a more experienced lineman on a short-term deal until a long-term answer can be identified.

That’s how Wynn could make sense, provided another team doesn’t bite in the second free-agent wave.
