No. 5: Matthew Bergeron could be a nice backup to Trent Williams on 49ers’ left side

One of the 49ers’ main holes to fill this offseason will be on the offensive line. Mike McGlinchey is set to become a free agent unless a miracle happens within the next couple of weeks.

San Francisco also has problems keeping offensive linemen healthy. Drafting more depth chart help certainly needs to be a priority. Insert offensive lineman Matthew Bergeron from Syracuse.

Pros

The native of Victoriaville, Quebec was invited to the 2023 Reese Senior Bowl. He has a massive frame standing at 6-foot-5 and 322 pounds. Bergeron is great one-on-one. He gets his hands in a position to control the defensive lineman, giving his quarterback a few extra seconds to make a play.

In 11 games played in 2022, he only gave up four sacks. Pretty impressive stat for one of Syracuse’s team captains.

Cons

It seems like sometimes Bergeron doesn’t always make the right decision on who to block, especially when it comes to the blitz. He also sometimes seems a bit out of place on run plays.

Bergeron is ranked fifth in the winter scouting bureau.
