He might not have gotten close to the record at the NFL Combine, but Deebo Samuel put in a solid 40-yard time that is on the right side of the threshold.

If a wide receiver runs more than a 4.5-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine, he better have other attributes going for him other than speed.

Particularly size, great hands, exceptional route-running abilities and more.

Receivers who get under that 4.5-second threshold can usually rely on speed as an integral part of their games.

For San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel, his 40-yard dash managed to squeak just inside that plateau cutoff.

Samuel participated in the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine, and his efforts ultimately led to the Niners drafting him in Round 2 of that year’s NFL Draft at No. 36 overall out of South Carolina.

Officially, Samuel ran a 4.48 40-yard dash at that year’s combine, and you can check out the video of him doing so below:

Interestingly, the “all the tools” part about the above tweet somehow comes to describe the “wide back” nature Samuel possesses quite perfectly.

How did Deebo Samuel 2019 40 time compare to other wide receivers?

Samuel wasn’t the fastest player during the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine by any means, and he wasn’t even the fastest wide receiver.

From that year’s class, the following wideouts posted better 40 times:

  • Parris Campbell, Ohio State (4.31)
  • Andy Isabella, Massachusetts (4.31)
  • Mecole Hardman, Georgia (4.33)
  • D.K. Metcalf, Mississippi (4.33)
  • Terry McLaurin, Ohio State (4.35)
  • Emanuel Hall, Missouri (4.39)
  • Darius Slayton, Auburn (4.39)
  • Johnnie Dixon, Ohio State (4.41)
  • Miles Boykin, Notre Dame (4.42)
  • Gary Jennings, West Virginia (4.42)
  • Ashton Dulin, Malone (4.43)
  • Jazz Ferguson, Northwestern State (4.45)
  • Alex Wesley, Northern Colorado (4.45)
  • Dillon Mitchell, Oregon (4.46)
  • Jaylen Smith, Louisville (4.47)
  • Hakeem Butler, Iowa State (4.48)
  • Deebo Samuel, South Carolina (4.48)
  • A.J. Brown, Mississippi (4.49)

Of course, the record for the fastest 40 time at the NFL Combine is still held by wide receiver John Ross, who set it back in 2017 at 4.22 seconds yet never translated that speed over into a successful pro career.

So, perhaps, Samuel can be happy that speed wasn’t necessarily everything.

Instead, doing a bit of everything has made Samuel into one of the best all-around offensive weapons in the NFL today.
