On the clock: Pick No. 14: New England Patriots – Tyler Steen, Offensive Tackle, Alabama

New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones regressed terribly in his second season. Some of this was due to not having enough receiving help, but atrocious blocking was also a reason. The top two receivers are off the board here, so the Pats instead look to the trenches.

Tyler Steen is a solid blocker who did a good job protecting Bryce Young this season. The Vanderbilt transfer demonstrated his skills for the next level, being functional at all levels of the game.

An experienced four-year starter at Vanderbilt and Alabama, Steen’s biggest asset is his versatility. He can play essentially any position but center in the NFL, and he is a quality run blocker. In the passing game, he possesses excellent technique to nullify pass-rushing moves and has the base to avoid being pushed back by bull rushes.

The one drawback for Steen is he’s good but not great when it comes to his skill set. He lacks the strong upside of Peter Skoronski and Paris Johnson, but he’s still a good prospect who should do well at the next level.
