The 49ers are tied for second when it comes to Super Bowl victories. Just how many Super Bowl titles have they won over the years?

As we enter the week of Super Bowl LVII, fans of teams who are not in the game can’t help but reminisce about their team’s last Super Bowl victory or trip.

This is even more pronounced with the San Francisco 49ers who were so close to reaching the Super Bowl, having made it to the NFC Championship game.

After having been a dynasty in the 1980s and a powerhouse in the 1990s as well, it’s now been 28 years since the Niners won their last Super Bowl. This, of course, means there are adult fans of San Francisco who have never lived through a Super Bowl victory.

The 49ers are tied for second in Super Bowls victories with five.

What happened in those last five victories?

Super Bowl XVI: 49ers beat Bengals

The 49ers’ first Lombardi Trophy in franchise history was won in Super Bowl XVI on Jan. 24, 1982, by a score of 26-21.  This game occurred in Pontiac, Michigan, at the Pontiac Silverdome between the Niners and Cincinnati Bengals.

Quarterback Joe Montana threw for 157 yards and one touchdown, and he also rushed for another touchdown. With that performance, he won Super Bowl MVP and brought the team its first Super Bowl victory.

Super Bowl XIX: 49ers beat Dolphins

The second Super Bowl victory for the franchise came in Super Bowl XIX against the Miami Dolphins by a score of 38-16. This victory came in the 49ers’ backyard at Stanford Stadium on Jan. 20, 1985.

Montana once again put on a stellar performance, throwing for 331 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions.

This would give him his second Super Bowl MVP and the team its second Lombardi Trophy.

Super Bowl XXIII: 49ers beat Bengals

On Jan. 22, 1989, the Niners defeated the Bengals for the second time, this go-around in Super Bowl XXIII in Miami for a third title.

This time, wide receiver Jerry Rice would win Super Bowl MVP honors with a stat line of 11 receptions, 215 receiving yards and one touchdown.

Montana would put together a game-winning drive late in the fourth quarter, throwing a 10-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver John Taylor to win the game 20-16.

Super Bowl XXIV: 49ers beat Broncos

On Jan. 28, 1990, San Francisco won its fourth title with back-to-back Super Bowl victories. This time, the team defeated the Denver Broncos 55-10 in Super Bowl XXIV in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Montana would win his third Super Bowl MVP with another amazing performance, throwing for 297 yards, five touchdowns and zero interceptions.

At the time, his five touchdown passes set a Super Bowl record.

Super Bowl XXIX: 49ers beat Chargers

On Jan. 29, 1995, the 49ers won Super Bowl XXIX to become the first franchise to win five Super Bowls.

This would be the first for quarterback Steve Young as a starter, and he would not disappoint. He threw for 325 yards, six touchdowns and zero interceptions. He would break Montana’s Super Bowl passing-touchdown record with those six, a record that still stands to this day.

Young went on to win the Super Bowl MVP award (his first) and lead the team to a 49-26 victory over the San Diego Chargers.
