The last time the 49ers won the big game it was Super Bowl XXIX. We take at some of the highlights from that day all those years ago.

The San Francisco 49ers suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2023 NFC Championship game.

Already on their third-string quarterback, the undefeated rookie Brock Purdy was injured on the Niners’ first offensive drive of the game with an elbow injury that could see him out for at least six months.

The rest of the game didn’t go the 49ers’ way much either, and they ended up losing the game 31-7.

A win in that game would’ve sent them to their eighth Super Bowl appearance.

When did the 49ers last win a Super Bowl?

Their last victory in the big game was all the way back in Super Bowl XXIX, which took place on Jan. 29, 1995, in Miami.

Needless to say, it’s been a while since San Francisco last won the Lombardi Trophy.

What were some of the highlights from that day back in 1995?

49ers Super Bowl records

The 49ers thrashed the then-San Diego Chargers by a score of 49-26 in Super Bowl XXIX. They also set some Super Bowl records along the way that have held up for 20-plus years.

GOAT wide receiver Jerry Rice grabbed 10 receptions for 149 receiving yards and tied his own record with three receiving touchdowns, which he had set a few years earlier.

Quarterback Steve Young finally got the figurative “monkey off his back” in this game. He threw for 325 yards and a whopping six touchdowns, a passing-touchdown record that still stands today.

Of course, in the most poetic fashion, the Super Bowl passing touchdown record he broke was previously at five, set by his predecessor, Joe Montana.

Young would end up winning his first Super Bowl MVP for his amazing performance in that game.

Another record that was tied that day that doesn’t get mentioned too much was from kicker Doug Brien, and he made seven extra points to tie a previously set record.

Other 49ers Super Bowl highlights

The Niners defense also had a standout day against the Chargers.

The defensive secondary grabbed three interceptions on the day with one each coming from cornerbacks Toi Cook, Eric Davis and the Hall of Famer, Deion Sanders.

Current familiar faces

There were a number of familiar faces as well who played in Super Bowl XXIX. One of the running backs on the field for the Chargers was none other than Eric Bieniemy, the current offensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs.

San Francisco’s offensive coordinator that day was none other than Mike Shanahan, father of current head coach Kyle Shanahan. One of the wide receivers on the 49ers that day was Ed McCaffrey, the father of current Niners running back Christian McCaffrey.
