49ers news: Deebo Samuel on injury report, Charles Omenihu to play vs. Eagles
By Peter Panacy
The 49ers looked as if they’d have a clean slate of health before the NFC Championship game against the Eagles, but Deebo Samuel is now listed as hurt.
The San Francisco 49ers’ injury report after the divisional-round win over the Dallas Cowboys appeared to be pretty optimistic.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan listed only three players — defensive end Charles Omenihu (oblique) and running backs Christian McCaffrey (calf) and Elijah Mitchell (groin) — as having suffered injuries during that game, and all three were projected as day-to-day, likely to return for the Niners’ NFC Championship game matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Practices for the game picked up on Wednesday, however, and there’s a new name added to the list of those hurt in advance of Sunday’s contest.
49ers injury news: Deebo Samuel is day-to-day with ankle injury
Shanahan held All-Pro wide receiver Deebo Samuel back from Wednesday’s practice because of an ankle injury.
“It’s been there for a little bit,” Shanahan told reporters of the ankle injury, via 49ers Webzone. “I think he’ll be all right, but it concerned us enough to not let him go today.”
Assuming that’s the case, Samuel will likely be in the mix alongside McCaffrey and Mitchell as players who won’t receive a full workload this week but will be healthy enough to play at Philadelphia.
“It’s just kind of sore,” Samuel added.
49ers won’t part ways with Charles Omenihu despite recent arrest
San Francisco received some negative news earlier in the week when Omenihu was arrested on Monday for an alleged domestic violence incident in San Jose, California. He subsequently posted bail and was released, but the incident will undergo further investigation from the district attorney.
Shanahan and the 49ers’ front office made the expected comments shortly after news of the incident broke, but the head coach clarified the team’s immediate plans for Omenihu ahead of Sunday’s game:
"We’ve looked into it for the last 24 hours, or 48 hours,. Not necessarily myself, but other people. We feel very good letting the legal process take care of itself. Don’t feel we should kick him off our team at this time."
For now, the 25 year old defensive end figures to be part of the Niners’ defensive efforts against the Eagles.
The two teams square off on Sunday, Jan. 29 at 3 p.m. ET from Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia for the right to represent the NFC in Super Bowl LVII later in February.
