The 49ers and Eagles are headed to the NFC Championship game. Here we take a look at the head-to-head history between the teams.

The San Francisco 49ers head to Lincoln Financial Field this Sunday to take on the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game.

Surprisingly, this will only be the second meeting between the two teams in NFL postseason history. The first time these two teams played was back in the 1996 postseason when the Niners took a 14-0 victory in the Wild Card round. It would be the first time the 49ers would face their former defensive coordinator Ray Rhodes since he left to become the Eagles’ head coach in the 1995 season.

San Francisco would come out of that game, though, looking like the defense was just fine by shutting out its opponents. Both touchdowns in that game would come from Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young, who rushed for one and threw another to the GOAT, wide receiver Jerry Rice.

49ers vs. Eagles: History of matchups

The 49ers have the regular-season edge in head-to-head matchups against the Eagles, leading the series 19-14-1.

The first matchup between the two franchises was all the way back in 1951, and Philly would win that game 21-14.

The two teams split their last two meetings 1-1 with the Niners taking the last meeting by a score of 17-11 early on in the 2021 season. In that game, quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo scored both touchdowns for San Francisco, with one rushing and one passing touchdown to wide receiver Jauan Jennings for an 11-yard strike.

The previous meeting before that was in 2020 in which the Eagles won by a score of 25-20. This was the game in which wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, then a rookie, famously hurdled an Eagles defender to score a touchdown on a 38-yard run.

An unfortunate pick-six late in the fourth quarter, though, would seal San Francisco’s fate that day.

49ers vs. Eagles: Outlook for 2023 NFC Championship game

All history aside, Sunday will showcase two of the best teams in the NFL. There’s a reason that these two were No. 1 and No. 2 in the NFC this season.

A number of players from both sides were named as finalists for the Associated Press 2022 NFL awards, and quarterback Jalen Hurts of the Eagles was named a finalist for the NFL MVP Award and Offensive Player of the Year.

Not to mention head coach Kyle Shanahan and defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans were named finalists for Coach of the Year and Assistant Coach of the Year, respectively.
