49ers news: Brock Purdy, Jalen Hurts have already made NFL history
By Peter Panacy
The 49ers and Eagles will send a pair of young QBs, Brock Purdy and Jalen Hurts, to the NFC Championship game, and that’ll make NFL history.
The NFL has turned over to a new generation of quarterbacks.
With championship weekend just days away, gone are the days when future Hall of Fame signal-callers like Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers and Ben Roethlisberger are battling it out for a berth in the Super Bowl.
Instead, the final four quarterbacks are as follows:
- Joe Burrow, Cincinnati Bengals
- Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs
- Jalen Hurts, Philadelphia Eagles
- Brock Purdy, San Francisco 49ers
Mahomes, 27 years old, is the “elder statesman” of this predominantly young group. Burrow, whose Bengals represented the AFC in Super Bowl LVI last February, is putting himself into the pantheon of top signal-callers in the league today.
And then there’s the duo set to battle it out in the NFC Championship game this Sunday, Purdy and Hurts.
Hurts, a legitimate MVP candidate, might have the pedigree over Purdy. Yet the latter has done nothing but win, smashing the notion that “Mr. Irrelevant” will be little more than a forgotten commodity.
The two have already set NFL history, too.
49ers news: Brock Purdy, Jalen Hurts the youngest QB tandem to start a conference championship game
As Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk broke down, the combination of Purdy and Hurts will make the youngest starting duo of quarterbacks in a conference championship game:
"The 23-year-old Purdy and the 24-year-old Hurts will become the first pair of starting quarterbacks in a conference championship game under age 25, and will have the lowest combined age for a pair of starting quarterbacks ever in a conference championship game."
Purdy will also be the third-youngest quarterback to start such a game, and only Roethlisberger in 2004 and Shaun King of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1999 were younger.

Needless to say, whichever quarterback advances to Super Bowl LVII will drive down the average age.
Charles Omenihu faces uncertain future with 49ers after arrest
On Tuesday, backup defensive end Charles Omenihu was arrested for an alleged charge of domestic violence.
Omenihu was subsequently released after posting bail, and the Niners subsequently released a statement that they were monitoring the situation and “gathering further information.”
Omenihu, 25 years old, notched 4.5 sacks during the regular season and had two more during the Wild Card win over the Seattle Seahawks.
San Francisco didn’t have media availability on Tuesday, but head coach Kyle Shanahan will speak to reporters on Wednesday afternoon after practice.
Omenihu and his future will likely be mentioned.
Football Outsiders likes 49ers over Eagles in NFC Championship
Currently, according to WynnBET, the 49ers are 2.5-point road underdogs against Philly.
However, according to Football Outsiders, the Niners’ DVOA metrics could ultimately push them in the direction of an upset:
"The San Francisco 49ers continue to lead the NFL in our weighted DVOA ratings after a win over Dallas that was bigger than the final score indicates. After adjusting for the quality of the Cowboys, the 49ers ended up with 61% DVOA for the game, putting them close to the dominating victories by Philadelphia (74%) and Cincinnati (78%) earlier in the weekend."
Overall, out of the four teams remaining, San Francisco’s weighted DVOA is 43.9 percent.
In contrast, the Eagles’ is 26.3 percent.
Perhaps the 49ers can pull off something of a road upset on Sunday when these two teams square off at 3 p.m. ET from Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
