Studs, duds from 49ers Wild Card win vs. Seattle
Stud: the 49ers defense
Week after week, the San Francisco 49ers defense is the definition of a stud. There are so many playmakers on this side of the ball that sometimes the usual difference makers are easily overshadowed.
All season long, they have prided themselves on exceptional play and Wild Card weekend would be no different.
They held Seattle to 70 yards on the ground and controlled the passing game respectively, despite being toyed with by DK Metcalf. He eclipsed 100 yards with ease and added two touchdowns. In fact, his 50-yard touchdown reception in the first half, slowed the 49ers momentum just as they were beginning to run away with the game.
The pass rush was led by defensive end Charles Omenihu and interior lineman Arik Armstead. Together they combined for multiple pressures and three quarterback sacks, Omenihu forced a fumble that was recovered by Edge specialist Nick Bosa.
They turned in a solid performance as expected, but moving forward, the defense will have to find a way to deal with a big-bodied receiver such as Metcalf if they want to continue their playoff run.
At this point it’s crucial. All it takes is one play and the game can change dramatically.
