No. 1: Jimmy G. gets re-signed in 2023: Unfinished business

Jimmy Garoppolo was brought to San Francisco during the rebuild to be the quarterback of the future. And while he’s proven to be effective, he hasn’t brought home the highly coveted Lombardi trophy, which is the goal of every franchise. He’s come close but on two separate occasions, he’s had to settle for, “there’s always next year.”

In some small way his fifteen minutes of fame are up. However, that doesn’t mean he couldn’t contribute through some type of supporting role.

After losing to the Los Angeles Rams last year in the playoffs, many thought his run was over entirely. It seemed a though even he was pretty sure that his tenure was over as well.

So why is he still around?

Aside from being a capable starter, and finding himself on a camp full of younger, inexperienced quarterbacks. The only other reason that makes sense is the unfinished business he set out to do when he was acquired. But not by Garoppolo alone.

By bringing him over, the front office has some unfinished business of their own to attend to. Seeing Jimmy G. win it all, no matter the capacity, brings them closure as well.  Many fans will disagree, but it makes sense form a management prospective. Seeing him win the big game, even as a backup, helps justify his tenure.

Will he get it? Only time will tell. But if Garoppolo signs on for another year, the idea of him staying for unfinished business no longer looks like ridiculous.
