Why Deebo Samuel is essential for the 49ers to have a deep playoff run

Admit it, the playoffs haven’t even started yet and you’re already salivating at the thought of a Deebo Samuel/Christian McCaffrey backfield. These two are going to be the two that you want to watch almost exclusively.

Because what’s better than two of the most explosive players in the NFL today on the same roster? If you’re head coach Kyle Shanahan, how do you not rewrite the playbook entirely. Now is the time for trick plays and offensive schemes that will make your head hurt.

Christian McCaffrey was pretty much an every down player since being traded to San Francisco, or so it seemed. Now he can get regular rest if they put Samuel in the game, or worse for the opposing defense, having them both on the field at the same time. The possibilities are endless for the offense because both carry a “swiss army knife” style of play.

In Week 8, McCaffrey caught a touchdown reception, ran for a score and threw a strike to wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. He was the 11th player in history to score three different ways offensively and the first to do so since LaDanian Tomlinson in 2005.

To his credit, Deebo Samuel threw a touchdown pass to Jajuan Jennings last year against the Los Angeles Rams and we all know how explosive he is running and catching the football.

Samuel didn’t play much at all this week, but that’ll prove to be the calm before the storm. Because when the San Francisco 49ers line up for their first offensive play next week in the playoffs, at home, all bets are off.
