What Brock Purdy’s success could mean for each QB on 49ers roster
49ers Quarterback No. 2: Jimmy Garoppolo
James Richard Garoppolo
In the eyes of the “Faithful,” he just won’t seem to go away. Fans thought they were rid of him following his subpar performance in the NFC title game against the Los Angeles Rams last February, but, boy, were they wrong. After his “final” presser, weeks turned to months and Jimmy G still wasn’t on the move. When his contract was restructured, fans were beside themselves.
However, when starting quarterback Trey Lance was lost to injury, whether fans want to admit it or not, there had to be a sigh of relief that Garoppolo was still in the building.
In hindsight, the contract restructuring in late August made John Lynch look like a genius.
After a few games, Garoppolo settled in and led his team to a five-game win streak. It looked as though No. 10 was well on his way to handling some unfinished business.
Unfortunately, right about the time that fans were eyeing a deep playoff run, the inexplicable happened. Lightning had struck twice, and the Niners were down another quarterback.
So, collectively, where do they go from here? Do they part ways with Garoppolo? Or do they sign him to a team-friendly deal to back up Purdy in 2023?
Despite what most fans want, it wouldn’t be shocking to see him return for another season. In terms of making a decision, it would be fair to say that without Jimmy G’s success this year, the season would have been over a long time ago. That will certainly be taken into account when making a decision on who stays and who goes.
It’s too early to tell, but almost anything is a possibility moving forward. One thing is definitely for sure, no matter what they decide, the team certainly has options.
