49ers replacement quarterback No. 4: Philip Rivers

Hey, another retired quarterback in the fray!

Technically, the Indianapolis Colts own the rights to quarterback Philip Rivers, so if unretired, Indy would have to grant him a release. But, with Matt Ryan now in town, it’s likely the Colts wouldn’t mind going that kind of route.

Rivers, like Ryan Fitzpatrick, hasn’t made many overtures about returning to the NFL in any capacity, although one report said that the former considered a return to Indianapolis once it traded away quarterback Carson Wentz to the Washington Commanders last offseason.

This could point to the 40-year-old veteran leaning a bit towards making a return, especially if the ever-elusive Super Bowl ring is within his grasp.

If he was to come out of retirement and join the Niners, it might just be.
