Stud: DeMeco Ryans

It would be astonishing if DeMeco Ryans doesn’t, at the very least, interview for a head coaching job at the end of the season, as he just continues to go from strength to strength as defensive coordinator.

One of the hardest things to do is make adjustments in the middle of the game, and not every coach is capable of doing that consistently well. Ryans, however, has done that a lot this season, and Sunday was the latest example.

The defense bent but didn’t break in the first half, and with the adjustments for the second half, they were able to completely shut out the Chargers to let the Niners steal the win.

Ryans brought a lot more pressure on Justin Herbert and clamped down on the run to force the quarterback to throw more. This in turn allowed the 49ers’ vaunted defensive line to ramp up the pressure and create bad throws.

Eventually, the final effective play of the game sealed the deal. The Niners pressured Herbert, got a hand on the arm to affect the throw and Talanoa Hufanga came away with the pick.

Ryans deserves to be a head coach, but the 49ers can’t be blamed if they secretly are selfish and want him to stay beyond this season.
