49ers vs. Rams: Watch Christian McCaffrey toss TD pass to Brandon Aiyuk
By Peter Panacy
The 49ers got a little tricky with Christian McCaffrey in Week 8 against the Rams, as he tossed a touchdown pass to Brandon Aiyuk in the second quarter.
The San Francisco 49ers had to get a little creative in their Week 8 NFC West matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, especially with All-Pro wide receiver Deebo Samuel inactive because of a hamstring injury.
Fans may recall a season ago at SoFI Stadium when Samuel acted the part of a quarterback, tossing a touchdown pass to fellow wideout Jauan Jennings in a key situation.
In Week 8, with Samuel out and the Niners in desperate need of a win, head coach Kyle Shanahan had to call upon another all-purpose weapon to deliver a key touchdown in a big situation.
None other than All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey, San Francisco’s recently acquired shiny toy grabbed from the Carolina Panthers prior to Week 7.
49ers use trickery vs. Rams, Christian McCaffrey throws TD pass to Brandon Aiyuk
McCaffrey is a pretty unique weapon, but on this 2nd-and-8 play from the Rams’ 34-yard line, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo threw was seemed to be an innocent lateral pass to the running back out in the flat.
Except McCaffrey wound up and delivered the beautiful strike to wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk for the 34-yard touchdown:
The Los Angeles defensive back responsible for covering Aiyuk ultimately bit in the direction of McCaffrey, who had Aiyuk almost entirely uncovered.

Like that, San Francisco responded to the Rams’ early lead, tying things up at 7-7 in the second quarter.
And while the 49ers certainly would have preferred having Samuel back in the fray, at least McCaffrey is making his best Samuel-like impressions by “doing it all” against a division rival.
