49ers inactives vs. Rams: Offense limited without Deebo Samuel, Kyle Juszczyk
By Peter Panacy
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is going to have to get creative with two of his best offensive weapons, Deebo Samuel and Kyle Juszczyk, inactive for Week 8.
For a little while, things were looking as if the San Francisco 49ers were getting healthier after suffering a rash of injuries the last few weeks.
However, with a crucial Week 8 bout against their NFC West rivals, the Los Angeles Rams, the Niners will be shorthanded once again, missing some of their most important offensive weapons.
All-Pro wide receiver Deebo Samuel, who suffered a hamstring injury during San Francisco’s Week 7 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, was officially ruled out by head coach Kyle Shanahan on Friday. And Samuel will be joined by the multipurpose all-offensive weapon, fullback Kyle Juszczyk, who suffered a broken finger in that same loss and underwent surgery to repair it this week.
Both players’ absences will heavily impact what Shanahan tries to do against Los Angeles on Sunday, not just in terms of Samuel’s dynamic playmaking abilities but all the small things Juszczyk does, both as a lead blocker and mismatch weapon.
More and more, the 49ers’ decision to aggressively trade for a Samuel-ish player, All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey, is beginning to look like an awfully smart decision.
One might expect McCaffrey to play a major role in Week 8, even more than what would have been the case if Samuel and Juszczyk were available.
49ers inactives vs. Rams: WR Jauan Jennings also OUT
Samuel isn’t the only Niners wide receiver who’ll miss Sunday’s contest.
No. 3 wide receiver Jauan Jennings is also dealing with a hamstring injury, and he was listed with Samuel and Juszczyk on San Francisco’s Week 8 inactive list:
- DL Arik Armstead
- FB Kyle Juszczyk
- WR Deebo Samuel
- LB Dre Greenlaw
- WR Jauan Jennings
- CB Jason Verrett
- DL Kemoko Turay
Meanwhile, Armstead misses his fourth game in the row with a foot injury, while the 49ers’ linebacker corps will again be tested with Greenlaw joining Azeez Al-Shaair on an injury list.

Al-Shaair is still on injured reserve.
Verrett, whom the Niners activated earlier this week, probably figures to return to action in Week 10 after San Francisco’s bye, which might be the smart play after missing almost all of 2021 with a torn ACL and spending the first third of this season recovering from that injury.
The 49ers and Rams kick off on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 4:25 p.m. ET from SoFI Stadium.
