49ers vs. Rams matchup No. 4: Niners defense vs. the turnover differential

The Niners have struggled with defensive takeaways over the last two weeks, so it shouldn’t be too big a shocker they now sit at minus-3 in the turnover-differential department.

True, San Francisco’s own offense hasn’t protected the ball well the last two weeks, turning it over six times during that timeframe, but the defense also needs to be held accountable and generate opportunities when they’re presented.

Fortunately, Matthew Stafford has only increased his reputation of being a turnover-prone player.

Thus far, Stafford has tossed six touchdowns against eight interceptions on the season, and his 3.6 interception percentage currently ranks fifth highest among qualifying quarterbacks. Additionally, Los Angeles has turned the ball over 13 times, which is actually one higher than the 49ers despite playing in one less game on the year.

It’s safe to admit the Rams have been relatively careless with the ball already this season, meaning the Niners should be able to walk away with a win if they can emerge on the right side of the turnover differential in this particular contest.
