49ers quarterback Brock Purdy (Round 7)

The final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, Mr. Irrelevant himself, Brock Purdy went from being a mere afterthought to close out all three days of the draft to being a mere snap away from serving as San Francisco’s starter.

Given Jimmy Garoppolo’s notable injury history, the chance of Purdy having to play in meaningful games this season is certainly there.

Purdy, who managed to beat out veteran backup quarterback Nate Sudfeld during the preseason, hasn’t needed to take the field yet, though, despite Trey Lance’s injury. Fortunately for the 49ers, Garoppolo has stayed healthy, so tossing a rookie in under center isn’t something the Niners have had to explore just yet.

Still, that doesn’t mean Purdy’s stock value is either low or on the decline.

If anything, the fact San Francisco made re-signing Purdy a priority during the offseason, paired with the fact Purdy beat him out, suggests the 49ers like what they have in the rookie. And they haven’t shaken up the 53-man roster at quarterback either despite losing Lance.

Good for Purdy.
