It hasn’t taken long for doubters to take San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance to task for his performance in Week 1

We can get the obvious out of the way, the San Francisco 49ers should have defeated the Chicago Bears in Week 1.

The 49ers have a superior roster to the Bears in every way, and the game started off as such, but Chicago got more into the game the longer it went on and ended up overwhelming San Francisco.

Quarterback Trey Lance didn’t have a good game, although in fairness it’s almost impossible for a quarterback to do so in the downpour that transformed Soldier Field into a swimming pool.

Lance went 13-for-28 passing for 164 yards and an interception, to go with 13 carries for 54 yards. Lance was fine to begin with, but regressed as the game and conditions went on.

It wasn’t a good game by any stretch of the imagination but let’s be fair. The conditions were impossible to play well in, he lost starting running back Elijah Mitchell to injury and was without a key safety valve in tight end George Kittle.

Week 2 presents an opportunity to make amends. There may be voices already doubting Lance, but the young quarterback is very self-aware and knows what he has to do.

While it looks likely that it might rain in Week 2 against the Seattle Seahawks, it won’t be the monsoonal conditions the team faced in Week 1. The 49ers open heavy favorites for a good reason as the Seahawks aren’t a good team despite their narrow victory over the Denver Broncos.

It’s time to back Lance in and not let a game, that in all honesty was a freak of mother nature and can’t be used one way or the other, define him.

Get the win over Seattle and get the season back on track (and with it, a guaranteed tie for the NFC West lead and essentially a reset headed into Week 3), and the media will soon be singing a different tune.
