The San Francisco 49ers 19-10 loss to the Chicago Bears can be whittled down to one primary reason.

It’s never good to start the season with a loss, but the San Francisco 49ers will be left to rue what could have been in a disappointing 19-10 defeat at Chicago to the Bears.

Between turnovers, injuries, some disappointing defensive lapses and the struggles of young quarterback Trey Lance to move the chains in some horrendously wet conditions, San Francisco have some things to work on heading into Week 2 against the Seattle Seahawks.

But perhaps the most important thing the team can address is some very poor discipline that allows the Bears to extend two touchdown drives in the game. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said as much, clearly frustrated at a game that slipped away.

Overall the 49ers were flagged for 12 penalties for a staggering 99 yards during the game. Essentially, they gifted the Bears a whole football field worth of free yardage.

The 49ers have to rally around their young quarterback while he goes through his share of growing pains as a starter. If the 49ers kept their heads on the field, there’s no reason why the team couldn’t have gotten out of Chicago with a ugly but satisfying win in Week 1.

It’s not time to panic just yet. The 49ers will face the Seattle Seahawks in Week 2 in presumably better conditions, and a win will allow the team to have at least a share of the lead in the NFC West and essentially have a reset headed into Week 3.

The NFC West isn’t as strong as it is in previous years. The Los Angeles Rams have some deficiencies exposed in their blocking and pass-rush, the Seahawks scraped a win thanks to some questionable Denver playcalling but still have one of the weaker rosters in the NFL, and the Arizona Cardinals lost a lot of key personnel in the offseason that’s effected them.

But the 49ers still have to fix the discipline. Cut down on the penalties, and the team will be able to cover the teething problems that Lance will experience this season.

Next. Cowboys fans manifesting Jimmy Garoppolo trade with 49ers are delusional. dark
