49ers roster 2022: Kyle Shanahan likely cuts these 5 players in first wave
By Peter Panacy
49ers first-cut candidate No. 4: Linebacker Curtis Robinson
The 49ers didn’t field their starting trio of linebackers against the Packers: Fred Warner, Dre Greenlaw and Azeez Al-Shaair, meaning Kyle Shanahan got to witness the full bulk of backups and reserves at the position, most of whom won’t have much of a chance to crack the 53-man roster anyway.
A couple could compete for the practice squad, yes, and perhaps that’s what’ll be at stake.
However, among those buried deep on the depth chart is third-year backer Curtis Robinson, whose efforts against Green Bay weren’t necessarily great, particularly on one whiff on a bad angle and a missed tackle during the game.
Perhaps general manager John Lynch tries to convince Shanahan to keep Robinson, a fellow Stanford alumnus, around for a bit longer. Yet Shanahan doesn’t have to care about collegiate ties, and he might be more inclined to see what undrafted rookies like Segun Olubi and Jeremiah Gemmel do instead with some increased field time.
Either way, Robinson could find himself in a position where he’s an easy decision and not one in which his continuing roster chances are favored.
