49ers roster bubble after beating Packers: Linebacker

Lock: Azeez Al-Shaair, Oren Burks, Dre Greenlaw, Fred Warner

Strong bubble: Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles

Weak bubble: Marcelino McCrary-Ball*, Curtis Robinson

Long shot: Jeremiah Gemmel*, Segun Olubi*

With the 49ers’ starting trio of linebackers — Azeez Al-Shaair, Dre Greenlaw and Fred Warner — not suiting up Friday night, Kyle Shanahan and defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans got a good look at the rest of the depth cast to see who might earn the fifth and likely final spot on the depth chart.

Oren Burks, one of the Niners’ offseason free-agent pickups, is safe because of his importance on special teams, and the safe bet would likely go towards another veteran, Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles, who wore the green dot during the game as San Francisco’s defensive captain.

Flannigan-Fowles, too, is a good special teams contributor.

If there was a darkhorse player who helped his chances, though, it’s undrafted rookie Marcelino McCrary-Ball, whose impressive 57-yard return after a gift of an interception helped set up the 49ers’ second touchdown of the night.

McCrary-Ball flashed some speed and elusiveness on the pick return, and that might put him ahead of the remaining backers potentially vying for a spot on the practice squad.
