QB Trey Lance

QB Nate Sudfeld

PS: QB Brock Purdy

There isn’t really a lot of drama in the 49ers’ quarterback room. Trey Lance heads into his first year as the starter with Nate Sudfeld all but guaranteed to serve as his primary backup for the 2022 season.

The team did draft former Iowa State signal-caller Brock Purdy with the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, but the roster is too stacked at other positions to even consider holding onto three quarterbacks. The likeliest scenario, then, is that Purdy sees plenty of time during the three preseason games to give him time to acclimate to the offense with the team hoping to stash him on the practice squad to grow as a player.

How Lance performs this season will obviously have a great impact on the Niners’ success for 2022, but the rest of the roster, as we’ll see, is in solid shape around him. This might allow for the first-year starter to grow into the role as the season progresses.

But unlike many of the spots on the roster, there really is no question about who the guys will be at the quarterback position.
