Unexpected 49ers training camp storyline No. 1: Trey Lance trajectory

Maybe we all should have seen this coming but instead elected to side in one camp or another.

Either Trey Lance would wholly dominate training camp, showing to the rest of the football world that San Francisco was more than justified to aggressively trade up to draft him a year ago. Or he’d completely flame out, looking exactly like the inexperienced prospect who’d never live up to his enticing-but-raw skill set.

The reality of what Lance has delivered thus far in camp has been somewhere in between, not quite dominant but not a complete disaster either.

Honestly, somewhat boring to talk about when saying “he’s steadily getting better but still has a long, long way to go.” It’s much easier to cherry-pick evidence from one side of the argument or another.

Hot takes are more fun to discuss than gradual trajectories.

A good day is frequently followed by a bad day, and so on. That’s been the reality of Lance’s camp thus far. Paired with going up against a tough 49ers defense, perhaps that’s permissible. Yet that cuts two ways, as Lance should be expected to hone his skills against the same defense, going up against them day after day after day.

Most probably predicted one of the two extreme outcomes, not a so-so performance with some good and some bad.
