Unexpected 49ers training camp storyline No. 2: Talanoa Hufanga blossoming

Understandably, San Francisco generated some concerns by letting veteran safety Jaquiski Tartt walk in free agency this offseason, which effectively tabbed 2021 rookie defensive back Talanoa Hufanga as the starter in Tartt’s stead heading into the new season.

In light of Hufanga’s coverage issues last season and general lack of athleticism, this appeared to be a massive liability.

Except nearly every aspect of 49ers training camp has suggested otherwise.

Hufanga has rarely given up the big play, and while the Niners have kept him closer to the box in practices to maximize his skill set, the former USC standout has been able to make big plays and confirm to defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans he’s the right defender for the starting gig:

"I think the one guy right now that stands out to me is [Hufanga]. I think Huf has been doing an excellent job. Back in OTAs when we started even up until now, he’s been doing a good job of just communicating much better."

While other defensive backs like Charvarius Ward and Jimmie Ward may be tasked with helping cover up some of Hufanga’s deficiencies, it’s certainly looking as if the sophomore’s leap from year one to year two has generated positive results that few likely predicted.
