What we learned from 49ers training camp: Ty Davis-Price might be the best rookie so far

I wasn’t a fan of San Francisco using an early NFL Draft pick on running back Ty Davis-Price with other needs staring the team in the face and the tendency of head coach Kyle Shanahan to get good production out of undrafted free agents at the position.

But the pick may be paying dividends, as Davis-Price has been the best rookie in camp and one of the best players overall.

Davis-Price has a real Deebo Samuel-like quality in him regarding his combination of strength and speed, possessing both the speed to get to the outside and the willingness to take a hit (and dish one out of his own).

And that’s not necessarily a low hurdle either with EDGE Drake Jackson and guard Spencer Burford both impressing a lot in camp (with the latter currently occupying a starting spot).

Davis-Price will put the pressure off Samuel in the backfield and allow him to be a proper wide receiver again, and the potential is there to be a real potent combination with starter Elijah Mitchell.

We’ll see how he goes in the preseason games, but the early returns from Davis-Price could very well justify his surprise selection.
