What we learned from 49ers training camp: Trey Lance still has work to do

The one thing every fan has been most looking forward to in 49ers training camp was quarterback Trey Lance practicing as the starter, and more specifically, how he improved.

Right now, the results are… mixed, to say the least.

Lance is still a raw quarterback, and this year will be full of ups and downs for him. The Niners defense is a top unit, and it’s not a surprise Lance has been overwhelmed at times.

There have been some positives, though. Lance has made some exceptional throws in practice and he’s developed particular chemistry with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. The quarterback also improved a lot more once his starting linemen got out onto the practice field, and he’s been pretty decent at handling the pressure for a young quarterback.

Lance also made some good throws off the back foot, utilizing his strong arm to supply the strength. It’ll take some time to develop throws like that to be consistent, but it’s an interesting facet of his game.

It’s one thing to take on the elite San Francisco defense on a practice field, but how Lance goes in shared practices against the Minnesota Vikings along with the preseason games will tell us how far along he’s truly gone.

Even if he has some work to do, he has a strong squad around him to help.
