49ers training camp difference No. 1: Trey Lance is steadily getting better

Understandably, the most attention at training camp is going to fall upon Trey Lance, him being tabbed as the unquestioned starter heading into 2022.

Week 1 wasn’t particularly great. Aside from day one of camp, the second-year pro struggled with interceptions and typically found himself hovering around a 50-percent completion rate. And while it’s unwise to peg all of those struggles upon him solely, there was still a lot left to be desired.

Week 2 was much better, however, with Lance cutting down on the interception totals and beginning to hit a stride.

Lance spoke with reporters on this maturation process:

"When you say things slowing down, it’s just getting better. And for me it’s every single rep, like every rep I take, I think the game slows down and that’s kind of the way I’m going about it every single day, one day at a time and every single rep is trying to learn as much as I can from it."

Granted, there have been some down days for Lance in light of the improvements in Week 2. During Sunday’s practice, the quarterback went 4-of-12 and was picked off by linebacker Fred Warner after having solid back-to-back days on Friday and Saturday.

If one looks at Lance’s progress like a stock-market watch, the general trend is increasing, though.

That’s still good despite one rough outing.
