49ers training camp difference No. 2: Cornerback battle is tougher than we thought

Heading into 2022, San Francisco’s offseason moves at cornerback were expected to solidify a position that was a primary weakness a season ago.

And, for the most part, the depth chart was probably going to be set long before 49ers training camp even kicked off:

  1. Charvarius Ward
  2. Emmanuel Moseley
  3. Jason Verrett
  4. Samuel Womack
  5. Ambry Thomas
  6. Dontae Johnson

Aside from the first two names, we should probably rethink everything.

Ward and Moseley have continued their strong play over the first two weeks. However, Verrett might be poised to stay on the physically unable-to-perform list into the regular season after his long recovery from a torn ACL last year.

Womack, pegged as a potential starter at nickel, is still battling it out with the veteran, Darqueze Dennard, while the 2021 rookie cornerback, Deommodore Lenoir, has vastly outplayed his fellow draft-class teammate, Thomas.

If anything, this is great news for the Niners, as they aren’t looking as if they’ll have to thrust either an unproven young player or a castoff veteran into a prominent role, which was the case a year ago at this time.
