While the 49ers have had plenty of memorable rookie hype machine moments in training camp, this one by Nick Zakelj and Sam Schlueter takes the cake.

It’s not always easy being an NFL rookie. And while the hazing that might have taken place decades ago won’t exist now (you can thank the collective bargaining agreement for that), there’s still no shortage of ways teams can make rookies feel like, well… rookies.

The San Francisco 49ers do this in a number of different ways, but one of the funnier tasks all first-year players have to do is some sort of performance in front of the fanbase during training camp.

This daily chore plays out in a number of different ways for each different rookie. And while it’s anyone’s guess as to how these rookies come up with what’s called a “rookie hype machine,” some have become far more entertaining than others.

49ers rookie hype machine pays homage to Stone Cold Steve Austin

On Monday, Aug. 1, the rookie hype machine tradition fell on two first-year offensive linemen, Nick Zakelj and Sam Sam Schlueter, and the duo decided to reenact what would be a classic WWE finish by the one and only, Stone Cold Steve Austin.

Seriously, it’s hilarious.

Using Stone Cold’s patented stunner move, Zakelj dropped Schlueter to the ground, then pinned him to the raucous chorus of applause from the Niners Faithful in attendance.

Not to stop there, Zakelj then grabbed some water to mimic Stone Cold Steve Austin’s beer-chugging celebration.

We understand why the rookie couldn’t use actual beer during practice. That might have taken things a bit too far, but this rookie hype machine was nevertheless epic and we’re sure tight end George Kittle, a massive WWE fan, would still approve.

A big hat tip to @TheSFNiners on Twitter for documenting and sharing this hilarious enactment.
