49ers roster: 5 players who have a ‘chip on their shoulder’ in 2022

No. 1: 49ers quarterback Trey Lance
The 49ers made it clear Trey Lance is their starting quarterback moving forward, and there’s no more “controversy” to be seen between him and the veteran he’s ultimately replacing, Jimmy Garoppolo.
If the Niners are fully committed, a good chunk of the NFL world certainly isn’t. One doesn’t need to dig deep to find well-known pundits and analysts who are either criticizing or concerned about Lance’s arm strength, lack of experience, raw skill set and so on.
The noise surrounding the No. 3 overall pick from the 2021 NFL Draft has surely been loud.

Lance should carry a chip on his shoulder this season, a natural response to the doubts and criticism. In some ways, he already revealed this in an offseason press conference where he, quite literally, told reporters ” it’s not my job to care what you guys say.”
That’s certainly saying the right thing. But underneath, he’ll still likely want to use it as motivation for proving why San Francisco can be justified investing so heavily in him.
The last thing Lance wants to do is prove his critics right. And while there’ll be some bumps along the way, as long as the net result is positive, he will have answered correctly.
