No. 2: Trey Lance must get that rapport going with 49ers’ top receivers

Training camp will mark the first extensive time Trey Lance has had the opportunity to practice with some of the 49ers’ top receiving weapons.

Of course, there were some practices last year. But, for the bulk of 2021, Lance was working with the second-team unit and not the starters. Same with regards to last year’s camp, too. And for most of offseason workouts thus far, two of the Niners’ best pass-catching weapons were unavailable, Deebo Samuel and tight end George Kittle.

Samuel was engrained in his contract-extension dispute, while Kittle was resting, essentially leaving fellow wideouts Brandon Aiyuk and Jauan Jennings as Lance’s preferred targets in practices this year so far.

While Samuel’s situation isn’t resolved yet, and it’s possible he elects to stay off the practice field until he receives a new deal, having Kittle back should be a massive boost.

And it’s one Lance will want to take full advantage of.

Sure, it’s fair to question Lance’s lack of experience and wonder how big an X-factor that’ll be this season. Yet San Francisco has done a tremendous job ensuring Lance has as many weapons at his disposal as possible.

He’ll want to take advantage of those right away to make up for any lost time.
