49ers prediction No. 3: Samuel Womack will be the only rookie to start in Week 1

The Niners put together a fairly promising 2022 draft class despite the absence of a first-round selection, but there aren’t too many avenues to starting roles.

Of the picks that were done on Day 2 for San Francisco, all of them are buried on the depth chart. Drake Jackson probably will only play on obvious passing downs, Ty Davis-Price will be part of a running back rotation, and Danny Gray will be the fourth wide receiver and resident deep threat in the receiving corps.

However, the 49ers could have found a hidden gem in fifth-round pick Samuel Womack, with the speedy cornerback from Toledo flashing serious potential in the rookie minicamp.

Womack is a bit of a question mark, though, as he didn’t play against the Niners’ star receivers, so whether or not he can keep up his momentum is questionable.

But with the nickel cornerback situation a bit thin, San Francisco needs him to step up. Ideally, Jason Verrett will return so Emmanuel Moseley can kick inside to the nickel, but Verrett’s durability is pretty much non-existent, sadly, given his ability to be a shutdown corner.

But I have faith in Womack to keep it up, and the 49ers’ ability to find good players on Day 3 of the draft could very well hit again.
