49ers prediction No. 2: EDGE Charles Omenihu will rise up

One thing that’s worth keeping an eye on is who will bookend the line opposite EDGE Nick Bosa for 2022.

Bosa is very good at making opposing quarterbacks consider a different career choice, but with Dee Ford’s tenure on the team all but over, San Francisco needs someone to step up.

There are a few options that could work out for the 49ers. Kerry Hyder is back on the team after a brief hiatus with the Seattle Seahawks, rookie Drake Jackson flashed some excellent pass-rush potential in rookie minicamp and Samson Ebukam was solid enough last season.

But Charles Omenihu, who joined the team in a midseason trade in November from the Houston Texans, has always flashed interesting potential, which showed itself in the playoffs last season when he had 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble in the Wild Card playoff game against the Dallas Cowboys.

While Jackson is set to be the future starter at the position, he still has to get his run defense up to a point where he can start on all downs.

Omenihu could fill the gap in 2022, and he looks set to make the position his own for the time being.
