With training camp upon us this week, we look at some bold takes concerning the 49ers as they look to get back into the Super Bowl.

The time is almost upon us. On Wednesday, the San Francisco 49ers once again take to the field as we begin the actual practice portion of training camp, and the preseason will well and truly be underway.

There’s a lot of expectation for a team that got to within a hair of the Super Bowl last season, but there’s also uncertainty as it also moves on at quarterback towards second-year signal-caller Trey Lance.

While most of the starting positions are more or less settled, there are still some big questions at center, strong safety and nickel cornerback for the Niners to answer.

Still, there’s cause for optimism. Especially if Lance can make a big jump in his second season.

But with a new season ahead of us, let’s look at some predictions as we enter training camp.

49ers prediction No. 1: Brock Purdy will beat out Nate Sudfeld for backup quarterback role

One of the roles up for grabs is the role behind Lance for backup quarterback, and the role will go to either the journeyman, Nate Sudfeld, or the final “Mr. Irrelevant” 2022 NFL Draft pick, Brock Purdy.

While neither is a particularly appealing option for San Francisco if Lance goes down, Sudfeld didn’t impress much in mandatory minicamp earlier this year, while Purdy at least had some decent throws.

Purdy also has more potential as a dual-threat quarterback despite his lack of a throwing arm, so he has more potential to groom as a backup.

It’s a wide-open battle, but Purdy may very well have the inside track.
