49ers training camp battle No. 2: Cornerback
Nearly the entirety of 2021 showed just how problematic it was for San Francisco to have neglected its cornerback room for multiple years.
Well, that changed this offseason and in a number of big ways.
From the high-profile free-agent pickup of cornerback Charvarius Ward to re-signing oft-injured-but-productive-when-healthy Jason Verrett, then using a fifth-round pick on Toledo defensive back Samuel Womack to hopefully address a void at nickel, the 49ers’ cornerback room no longer seems to be a primary weakness.
If anything, it could be a strength.
However, about the only known commodity here is Ward, who’ll assume the CB1 boundary role this season. After that, things get awfully fluid.

Ward’s opposite number could be Verrett, provided he’s fully recovered from last year’s ACL tear and is able to stay healthy. Or it could be fellow corner Emmanuel Moseley, who can never seem to remove himself from the starting lineup and for good enough reasons.
Can Womack secure that nickel role in year one? If so, he’ll have big shoes to fill with long-time Niners starter K’Waun Williams now suiting up with the Denver Broncos.
How this particular depth-chart battle pans out should be awfully intriguing when San Francisco kicks off camp.
