What 49ers would rename Levi’s Stadium (if they ever chose to)

The 49ers probably have no interest in dropping the naming rights to their home field, Levi’s Stadium, anytime soon. But if they did…

San Francisco 49ers fans know all too well how naming rights to classic stadiums can get a little crazy.

Going not too far back into Niners lore, remember how Candlestick Park earned the not-so-favorable name of 3Com Park back in the 1990s, then Monster Park?

However, any San Francisco fan never gave into calling the legendary stadium anything else but its appropriate name, Candlestick. Or “the Stick,” for your abbreviation.

At any rate, the Pittsburgh Steelers are apparently ditching their own name for their home venue, Heinz Field, for the less-than-eloquent Acrisure Stadium, and just like their 49ers counterparts, the fanbase over in the Steel City probably isn’t going to stop using Heinz Field anytime soon despite the name change.

That got us thinking, though. If the Niners ever decided to change up Levi’s Stadium down the road, despite the famous jeans-making company’s ties to Northern California, what should the name be?

And, no, we don’t have to stick with corporate options here.

No. 3: 49ers rename Levi’s Stadium “Bill Walsh Field”

The Niners have done this before. Why not do it again?

San Francisco christened the actual playing surface at Candlestick Park “Bill Walsh Field” back in 2008. And while the name didn’t exactly stick (who knows to differentiate between stadium names and the playing field itself?), continuing to honor the late-great Hall of Fame coach would be pretty special.

Particularly when viewing Walsh as the greatest coach in 49ers history.

Bill Walsh Field would carry that legendary sort of association, linking the franchise back with its glory days while also providing a name that easily rolls off the tongue, just as it should have when it was associated with Candlestick.

Except there’s no Candlestick Park to compete with now.
