49ers surprise roster cut No. 4: Cornerback Deommodore Lenoir

Let’s rewind to 2021 again.

Then-rookie cornerback Deommodore Lenoir impressed during training camp and the preseason, which earned him some early looks once the regular season began. By the end of the year, however, Lenoir was relegated to the bench on defense despite the 49ers having all kinds of woes and injury concerns at the position.

Not a good way to finish out the season.

Entering 2022, one of the Niners’ key objectives was to reinforce the cornerback room, and this was accomplished by adding veteran free-agent Charvarius Ward and then grabbing former Toledo nickel cornerback Samuel Womack in the NFL Draft, among other moves.

Not to mention re-signing another veteran, Jason Verrett, who clouds up the depth chart if he can stay healthy.

Now facing plenty of competition for one of arguably two remaining spots at cornerback, Lenoir simply might not have the prowess to overcome better options like Ambry Thomas and Dontae Johnson, who appear to have far easier paths to make the 53-man roster.

It’s very likely Lenoir is looking at a “one and done” campaign with San Francisco.
