All-time Bay Area athlete No. 2: Joe Montana, San Francisco 49ers (NFL)

Given we’re a Niners fan side, naturally we have to end this list by mentioning 49ers players. There’s no other way about it.

And there’s no way we can leave quarterback Joe Montana off the list either.

Montana, like Steph Curry, is another one of those rare athletes with four championships to brag about, and also like Curry, Montana is always tagged as being one of the 10 best, perhaps even one of the five best to ever play his respective sport.

Until New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady came along (himself an unapologetic Montana fan), NFL circles all pointed to Montana being the greatest quarterback of all time.

Montana, the eight-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro, had plenty of regular-season success, which included him netting two MVP awards.

Yet it was his performance in the playoffs that stand the test of time.

Sure, being a three-time Super Bowl MVP helps, and that number eclipses Curry for an individual championship MVP. But consider this, Montana never threw an interception in a Super Bowl. Not once.

Even Brady can’t claim that.
