49ers free-agent target No. 4: Offensive tackle Nate Solder

We’re long removed from the days when former New England Patriots left tackle Nate Solder was one of the best at his position. And it sure appeared as if the Pats moved on from him at the right time, as Solder’s four-year stint with the New York Giants from 2018 through 2021 wasn’t exactly impressive.

At 34 years old, Solder’s best playing days are far behind him, and he’s not likely to have any big-time suitors at this point during the offseason. Especially after Pro Football Focus credited him with allowing six sacks and 36 pressures on 586 pass-blocking snaps a season ago.

That said, San Francisco’s offensive line depth could still use some help.

The 49ers don’t need a starter here at tackle, at least not with All-Pro Trent Williams manning the left side and right tackle Mike McGlinchey poised to return in time from a quad tear suffered last year.

However, the swing-tackle spot is very much up for grabs heading into camp.

Currently, the Niners are looking to employ Justin Skule in this role. But Skule, who missed all of 2021 with an ACL tear, shouldn’t be viewed as a likable replacement if either Williams or McGlinchey goes down with an injury.

Solder, at the very least, would bring that veteran’s presence and experience in case of an injury setback to one of San Francisco’s two starters.
