No. 2: 49ers running back JaMycal Hasty

The Niners made something of a shocking NFL Draft decision by adding former LSU running back Tyrion Davis-Price in Round 3.

San Francisco didn’t necessarily need a running back, particularly that early and especially with second-year pro Elijah Mitchell looking to capitalize on his impressive rookie season, one in which he set a franchise record for a first-year pro with 963 rush yards.

Mitchell is squarely safe, yes. But the rest of the depth chart could easily be shaken up. A lot.

The two biggest players threatened by Davis-Price’s presence are tailbacks Trey Sermon and JaMycal Hasty, neither of whom truly impressed much at all in 2021.

Sermon, the 49ers’ third-round draft choice from a year ago, managed only 167 yards his rookie season and found himself regularly inactive towards the end of 2021, while Hasty became something of an afterthought, too, and it’s notable he fumbled twice on only 39 touches.

As disappointing as Sermon might have been in year one, it’s still far too early for the Niners to completely give up on him.

They won’t say the same about Hasty, though.
