49ers takeaway No. 3: Trey Lance and Jauan Jennings are building an early rapport

One of the biggest things to watch for this offseason is to see which receivers new quarterback Trey Lance will throw to the most.

There’ll be plenty of throws left in the preseason, but early on Lance has been throwing a lot to wide receiver Jauan Jennings, who has slowly been gaining a bigger role.

Deebo Samuel wasn’t present at the OTAs as he’s still holding out, so Jennings is now the WR2 on the roster until the holdout ends. To see Lance trusting him is a good sign if Jennings has to shoulder more of the offense in the unlikely event San Francisco decides to trade Samuel instead of extending him.

Much more likely is Samuel will get paid and return, but when that happens will be anyone’s guess.

For now. however, Lance and Jennings have been building a promising rapport early on.

And a quick footnote on Lance as well: He’s been throwing very well, but this isn’t particularly noteworthy on its own as quarterbacks are expected to excel in these early portions of the preseason.

He’s doing what he should be doing right now, but we won’t have a good idea of how much he’s developed until later on.
