49ers OTA overreaction No. 2: Brock Purdy won’t be good
OK, well, this might not be too big an overreaction. But it might be a little far-fetched to assume rookie quarterback Brock Purdy, the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, is absolutely doomed when it comes to making the 53-man roster.
Purdy, unlike Danny Gray, had a rough go at it during rookie minicamp, and it appeared as if those struggles carried over into the early phases of OTAs, particularly from the San Jose Mercury News’ Cam Inman breaking down one specific play:

Lance: Mostly underneath passes, missed high/wild on 2
Aiyuk WR1 w/out Deebo, Jennings WR2 who had drop then caught high ball
RB rotation with Elijah rehab knee: JWJ, Hasty, Sermon, Davis-Price, Mason
Knight INT (Purdy) ends it

Specifically, rookie cornerback Qwantrezz Knight picking off Purdy towards the end of the day.
Again, there’s not a lot to unpack here aside from the fact the former Iowa State Cyclone isn’t exactly making any cases to climb his way up the depth chart.
There’s a long way to go, though, so maybe Purdy winds up impressing a bit more in subsequent weeks and into training camp.
Maybe.
