49ers trade possibility No. 1: Wide receiver Deebo Samuel

Ah, yes, the trade 49ers fans seemingly were happy to avoid.

The Niners cleared a major “trade” hurdle with disgruntled All-Pro wide receiver Deebo Samuel when Round 1 of the 2022 draft was in the books. And despite some high-drafting teams reportedly making offers for him, San Francisco didn’t bite.

Smart move. At least for now.

Two things, however, could influence whether or not the 49ers stick to their guns here and keep him on the roster.

For starters, there’s always the possibility another team winds up offering a trade package simply too good for the Niners to pass up, likely one that’d involve multiple first-round picks and a player or two. Maybe more.

The other possibility is Samuel might still be so dug in with his trade request that he engineers a hold-out of sorts in training camp and into the preseason, perhaps longer, even if the fines from doing such would increase exponentially.

We’ve seen it before. Remember running back Le’Veon Bell holding out from the Pittsburgh Steelers for all of 2018 amid his own contract dispute?

Perhaps San Francisco finally hits that impasse and gives up. Or, possibly, it gets that can’t-refuse trade offer.
