49ers final NFL Draft selection, ‘Mr. Irrelevant’

QB Brock Purdy, Iowa State

San Francisco’s final draft pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, and the final overall selection in the draft as a whole, was used to select Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy.

For starters, Purdy is an Iowa State legend, passing for 12,170 yards and 81 touchdowns during his four-year career with the Cyclones.

While Purdy was an excellent college quarterback, at least early on in his college tenure, there are nevertheless concerns about his game translating to the pros, which is the reason he was a seventh-round pick and just barely escaped falling into the ranks of the undrafted. His arm strength and release are both questionable, and scouts wondered why his production fell over the last two seasons after a notably strong start at Iowa State.

Purdy should be viewed as a potential backup quarterback in the NFL.

In year one, he will most likely end up on the practice squad with the absolute upside potential to earn the second-string spot behind Trey Lance if the rookie shines in camp and the preseason.
