49ers UDFA No. 2: OL Jason Poe, Mercer

The 49ers had eyes on small-school offensive lineman Jason Poe before the NFL Draft, hosting a predraft workout with him and subsequently bringing him aboard as an undrafted free agent.

The 6-foot, 300-pound lineman was actually a running back early in his collegiate career at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas, eventually adding the weight necessary to become an interior offensive lineman.

As such, Poe’s movement skills are certainly there, and it’s not hard to see that kind of ability on the field when he plays.

There might be a bit of rawness to his game, yes. And Poe will have an uphill struggle considering the Niners already drafted two additional linemen in Spencer Burford and Nick Zakelj, both day-three picks.

However, San Francisco’s offensive line depth a year ago was certainly a question mark, and it’s clear the team is throwing as many darts as possible to ensure this problem doesn’t repeat itself again.

The 49ers could appreciate Poe’s athleticism, which surely turns him into an under-the-radar favorite to wind up carving out a niche role in year one.
