49ers Tight Ends

Lock: Ross Dwelley, George Kittle

Strong Bubble: Charlie Woerner

Weak Bubble: Tanner Hudson, Jordan Matthews

Long Shot: Garrett Walston*

The Niners didn’t throw any resources in what was considered to be a weak NFL Draft class this offseason, although they did bring in former North Carolina tight end Garrett Walston as an undrafted free agent.

He’ll essentially round out the back end of the depth chart, though, and little more should be expected of him.

Instead, the primary battle to watch here will be which player winds up securing the No. 3 tight end role behind Ross Dwelley and the All-Pro, George Kittle, who are all but assured the top two spots here anyway.

Unless San Francisco elects to keep four tight ends on its 53-man roster (it’s done so in the past), third-year pro Charlie Woerner likely gets the final nod because of his solid run-blocking skills, leaving Tanner Hudson and Jordan Matthews to fend for the scraps via a practice squad designation.
