49ers feel need for speed, draft Danny Gray at No. 105 overall
The 49ers wanted some speed at wide receiver, so they ended up grabbing SMU wideout Danny Gray with the final pick in Round 3 of the 2022 NFL Draft.
With the 105th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers selected Danny Gray, the wide receiver out of SMU.
In a shocking move where most thought that an offensive lineman or defensive back would be selected, the Niners went with a wide receiver, even more shocking considering they used their previous Round 3 pick on a running back, Tyrion Davis-Price, when that wasn’t considered much of a need at all..
Standing at 5-foot-11 and weighing 186 pounds, Gray played for two seasons at SMU. He finished his college career there with 1,251 yards receiving and 13 receiving touchdowns.
With news of wide receiver Deebo Samuel wanting a trade clogging the airwaves for the past week or so, this move comes as a way of bolstering a position group that may be taking a hit.
What will 49ers do after drafting Danny Gray?
San Francisco still has six selections left in the draft. At this point, it looks as though an offensive lineman or defensive back might be the most pressing need for the next selection of the 49ers.
With Gray in the red and gold, though, general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan look to have addressed a position group that maybe did not have a gaping hole, but they selected who they considered the best player available.
The selection of Gray ended what was somewhat of a surprising day two of the draft for the Niners.
With day two in the books, Lynch and Shanahan will have a busy day three with a slew of picks ahead of them.
The most lingering question of day three in the 2022 draft will not be whom they select in the next four rounds.
Rather the big question on everyone’s minds is, do they move quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo in a trade?
