49ers 2022 NFL Draft target No. 4: CB Zyon McCollum, Sam Houston State

Sticking with small-school cornerbacks, Zyon McCollum is an interesting prospect who lit up the NFL Combine running a 4.33 40-yard dash. McCollum recorded 13 interceptions during his time at Sam Houston State, so scouts love the playmaking ability he displayed.

As with Joshua Williams, the question will be if McCollum can take his freakish athleticism and learn how to play the game with disciplined technique. If so, then he may be on his way toward a fruitful career in the NFL.

McCollum is being projected to go in the third or fourth round, but there is no telling how high other teams may view him on their draft boards. He also showed ability as an all-around corner, not just able to guard receivers, but willing and able to come up to make a stop on a running back.

McCollum measures 6-foot-2 and 199 pounds, the ideal size for today’s NFL cornerback. The boom-or-bust potential is there, and the 49ers may pull the trigger and see if they can get a steal.
